Teen Innovators are your behind-the-scenes reporters on the businesses, careers, and culture of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, past, present, & future. We put the Yard's 21st century innovations into the context of 400 years of Brooklyn History. Here's what we've learned so far...

The Teen Innovators took a trip to view the Brooklyn Grange where City Growers gave us a exciting tour of their rooftop farm. Before the tour we took a moment to learn about the process our products go through before it gets to us. During the tour we were surprised to learn that City Growers not only tended to crops and flowers, but also managed a small bee farm and a chicken coop to produce their own honey and eggs. While experiencing all the wonders of the rooftop farm its easy to forget where you are, but all you have to do is look up at the beautiful skyline to remember you are right at home in Brooklyn, New York.

At our table we arrived at an unanimous decision, collecting numerous amounts of photos we were able to obtain the knowledge needed for future preference and the building stones necessary to create a sustainable world.

The Brooklyn Grange is like the lost library of Alexandria. there lies a myriad of opportunity as well as wealth of knowledge that can shape an autonomous future within the middle of a place no one would expect to find it; Brooklyn,New York

Urban farming is the future for sustainability and food justice! City Growers at the Brooklyn Grange are notorious for teaching about the Grange, and discussing how they maintain their innovative rooftop farm. The various methods include the reusing of compost, no use of pesticides, and their collection of rain water to grow and sustain their farm. The City Growers educate the local community and encourage them to start their own farms.

The Brooklyn Grange/ City Growers are community supported agricultural groups that maintain farms on intensive rooftops. Depicted in these pictures are harvested sunflowers, floral arrangements ready to be shipped to various hotels, and flowers grown throughout the farm at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

We begin again!
